My Dutch Coure has finally started!!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while you will know how hard I’ve been working on my Dutch comprehension for the last 2 months. We are talking an average of 1.5 hours EVERY day. Now I know that is a lot i am fully aware of that but i have this innate fear of being in something over my head and feeling like a rabbit in the headlights. Last night was the first official day of my course after the mix up last week.

The same lovely 13 people turned up and hooray we had a tutor! Everything was looking good. We went into the room and sat down randomly at tables it was all very lovely. Then it occurred to me that our tutor was a little nervous which is to be expected. She come from The Netherlands originally. As the class progressed I couldn’t help but to think that it was a little TOO basic for me and it has left me a tad disappointed. In each session the tutor plans to cover some culture, some history, a little practical speaking and a vocab sheet. Here is what we covered today.

We spent near enough the first hour covering dutch cutler with a mind map of what we associate with Holland. You can imagine how hard it ws for me to fake an interest in this. After 6 years I know pretty much all of the basic culture there is to know. So that bit seemed a little too time consuming to me.

The Dutch Alphabet – granted i haven’t covered this myself it was new to me and i didn’t even realised the dutch version of Alpha, Beta… is based on the christian names of men. Here is the list for those of you who are interested:

Mijn naam is…- We covered this along with learning Danke je wel. Then we went through Ik woon in Birmingham. Again by this point its just not moving quick enough for me. We then had this random “What do you want to know in Dutch” session to use up a bit of time. The vocabulary sheet we where given towards the end hardly had any of the words on that we had covered. Useful, yes, but we had spent an hour learning the alphabet and introducing ourselves, having a grammar sheet of body parts, months of the year, numbers  and colours just felt like she had given us the wrong one.

The tutor hadn’t taught a class for a while and i think you could really tell. She was animated and lovely and very funny at times but you know when there is a thin line between laughing with and laughing at someone the entire 2 hours felt like that.

I am a little bit gutted I’m not going to lie. I am going to stick with it, its only a 9 week course. The exam at the end is in 2 parts, a presentation about yourself and introducing another person and then a 5 minute presentation on any self chosen Dutch subject. With the way that todays class was i don’t know how we’ll ever get to that level! I am lucky enough to be able to talk about myself rather confidently now so thats one obstacle reached before lesson 2! I have a feeling it will get better, you’ve got to give things a bit of a go haven’t you! The tutor did promise more planning for next weeks session, i feel like todays was knocked up over lunch and her messy notes on scrap paper didn’t exactly fill myself with confidence.

I’ll give it time and keep up my lessons from home as well. The tutor is lovely and my class is lovely what else can I say? A friend of mine is doing a Spanish version (I may have mentioned this before) and she reckons her tutor doesn’t talk to the class in English and they spend the first hour talking the second hour talking with theory. I actually think i would maybe prefer this method. Watching super old Intel reports on Amsterdam’s Canals is a waste of my time. I didn’t come for a history lesson i came to learn a language.

So if i where a complete novice at Nederlands here is what I’ve learn to say today:

Hallo. Mijn naam is Maria. Ik woon in Aldridge. Dank je wel.

Ik vind Nederlands leuk!

I really don’t want this post to be a negative one. I have everything crossed for next week. After one session you can draw an honest opinion. If all I’m taught next week is how to say how old I am I might have a little something to say!
